Lucas Valley Technologies is a San Francisco Bay Area-based consulting firm. LVT was asked by a Fortune 100 oil company to assist its technical standards group in making a large collection of technical documents available on CD to both outside vendors and their own employees who travel worldwide with only the software they can carry with their laptops.

This group of documents normally resides on the company’s intranet, and is navigated via ASP pages. The first challenge was to figure out how to move an entire website – documents and all – to CD from ASP-based pages. The second challenge was to find a fast, efficient search engine that could run in a stand-alone CD environment without requiring users to install any new software to their computers. This search engine also needed to be able to read a wide variety of file formats – from Word DOC to Acrobat PDF and AutoCAD DXF files – and show highlighted search terms in any and all of the found documents.
